This 'Wolma Special' straight razor was made in Sheffield, England sometime around the turn of the century (~1910). Sheffield steel is known for its high quality and durability, though some rust has been introduced to this blade with time. The original cardboard coffin (aptly named for it's resemblance to a traditional coffin) box is sturdy and snug, and it's hard to find these types of cut throat cases these days. There is a slight nick on the blade. However, being that this razor features a hollow-ground bevel, the blade edge should hone out nicely.
Don't have access to whetstones for honing or multiple strops with sharpening compounds? You're in luck, as we are offering variations of this razor for those of you who would like to receive a shave-ready blade! We are quite familiar with using, sharpening, and maintaining straight razors, and we have curated several grits of whetstones and strops with varying compounds. So, if you would like this razor to arrive ready to slice through your whiskers, just be sure to select the 'honed' option at checkout. Just be sure to have a leather hanging strop ready if you plan to shave with this baby.
We can also polish the razor if you're not into the idea of shaving with blade that has some aged patina. Just be sure to select the 'Polished + Honed' option at checkout if that's more your style.
"Hey butthead! Don’t they say that even wiping-off, polishing, or sharpening an antique will damage its value?!"
Well, *they* say a lot.
*We’re* more into the idea that these once common, uninspired, & everyday things didn’t originally exist in their current state. Their now rusty, pitted, and dirty forms are tantamount to the fact that they once shined like new, and were (if we’re lucky) taken care of for as long as possible—often even being passed-down as heirlooms. They had a purpose, and were made to last long enough to suit that purpose; it’s that long-forgotten American business value that said: “My product is the only one of [these] you’ll ever need to buy.”
We see far more value in restoring a piece so that it lives for another lifetime than we do in leaving the rust, dust, & oxidative grime to pile up and encourage their own decay. Of course, if you'd like it rusty & dusty, just check out with the default option at checkout. That's ok, too.
